Fabric Cutters
While a pair of very sharp scissors is required for quilting, you will find that there is a much more effective method for cutting fabric. This tool is called a rotary cutter. A rotary cutter is a fabric-cutting tool that looks like a pizza cutter. You'll be way ahead of the game if you learn to rotary cut right away. It's a skill that lets you quick-piece your quilts, or at least cut the patchwork shapes you need very quickly. There are lots of variations of rotary cutters to choose from. The best assessment of which rotary cutter is best for you really just comes down to which one feels best in your hand.
Quilter Lighting
Good lighting is essential. The daylight lamps are recommended because they show the true colors of the fabric and provide excellent light to sew by. These come as floor lamps, table lamps or even some have clamps that allow you to attach it to you sewing table or other convenient spot.
Quilting Rulers
Transparent rulers are used to grip and accurately cut pieces of fabric. A 6" x 24" ruler is essential. A 6-1/2" or 12-1/2" square ruler such as the Quilter's Square makes it easy to cut shapes and check blocks.
Other Quilting Tools
There is a wide variety of quilting specific tools and other things that will help you to be more efficient as you make your quilting projects. This includes things like ruler holders, quilting organizers, thread catchers, bobbin holders, bobbin winders, thread holders, nubby garden gloves, see through containers, spray adhesives, pressing cloths, table top ironing boards, mini irons.
